Victoria didn’t let Jeff finish his questions. She slid the phone into its cradle after the last word, disconnecting the line, and looked down at her hands. When she finally looked up, Al was staring at her. She tried to avoid eye contact with him.
“Good job, Victoria. We can’t afford any loose ends, remember.” Al stood up from the couch, which ran the length of one of the walls in his second living area. He walked slowly toward her and placed his hand on her shoulder, then grabbed the phone and dialed another number.
“Gordo, everything’s in motion. Get everyone in place.” He hung up the phone, gave Victoria’s shoulder another quick squeeze, and left the room.
